What to do During Long Road Trips?

Family road trips are fascinating, especially if you’re going somewhere nice. However, it could get boring if you’re spending many hours or days in a car with your family. You might be wondering what you can do to make the time pass by quicker. Here are some mini-games and activities you can do with your family while on a road trip.

We do not recommend for the driver to partake in most of the games as it could be a distraction and not safe.

Road trips

Mini-games for a long road trip:

I Spy:

This classic game is perfect for children and adults. One person picks an object within sight, and everyone else takes turns asking questions to try to guess what it is. The answer can be anything – “I spy with my little eye something that is red” (color/shape/size) – and you can ask as many or as few questions as you want.

The License Plate Game:

Find all the different license plates from as many states as possible.

Two Truths and a Lie:

Take turns telling three stories about yourself, one of which is not true. The other players then have to guess which story is the lie.

Punch Buggy:

Whenever you see a VW Beetle, punch the person next to you and yell “Punch Buggy!” (Variations include different color cars or different types of animals.)

20 Questions:

One person thinks of an animal, vegetable, mineral, or another thing, and the others take turns asking up to 20 questions to try to figure out what it is.

The Silent Game:

See how long you can go without talking. The first person to speak loses. (Some parents use this game for a bit of quiet time in the car as traveling with kids sometimes gets loud and tiring.)

The Alphabet Game:

This game is also great for children and adults. One person starts by saying a word that begins with the letter “A.” The next person then has to say a word that begins with the letter “B,” and so on. If someone can’t think of a word, they are out. The winner is the last person left.

Word Association:

One person starts by saying a word, and the next person then has to say a word in response that is associated with the first word. For example, if the first person says “summer,” the next person might say “vacation” or “beach.” The game continues until someone either can’t think of an associated word or repeats it.

Garlic phone:

This game is played by passing an imaginary phone around a circle. The first person whispers a message to the next person, who then whispers it to the next person, and so on. The last person then says the message out loud. This game is usually good for laughs, as the message is often distorted by the time it gets back to the beginning.

Mini board games in a car

Tic Tac Toe:

A classic game that can be played with a pen and paper. The rules are simple: two people alternate putting an “X” or an “O” in a 3×3 grid until one person gets three in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) or there are no more spaces left.

Rock Paper Scissors:

A simple game that requires no materials. Two people face each other and count down from three. On “one,” they each form a fist with one hand. They show either two fingers (for rock), a flat hand (for paper), or two fingers pointed up (for scissors). Rock smashes scissors, paper covers rock, and scissors cut paper. If both people choose the same thing, it’s a tie, and you play again.

Uno cards:

A classic card game that is easy to play on the go. All you need is a deck of Uno cards (which can be easily found at any store). The object of the game is to get rid of all your cards by matching the number or color of the card on top of the pile. When you only have one card left, you must shout “Uno!”

Alias:

This is a game where players have to guess words based on clues. One player is chosen to be the clue-giver, and the other players are detectives. The clue-giver then whispers a word to the detective, who starts to guess. If the detective guesses correctly, they get a point. If not, the next detective gets a chance to guess. This continues until all the detectives have had a chance to guess or until the clue-giver runs out of time.

Sudoku:

This is a game where you have to fill in a 9×9 grid with numbers so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that make up the grid contains all of the digits from 1 to 9.

Games on the phone or tablet

2048: A game where you combine tiles with the same number on them to create a tile with the sum of those numbers. For example, if you combine two tiles with the number 2 on them, you create a new tile with the number 4.

Snake: A game where you control a snake and try to eat as many apples as possible. The more apples you eat, the longer your snake gets.

Tetris: A game where you have to rotate and place tetrominoes (shapes made up of four squares) so that they form complete rows, which then disappear.

Angry Birds: A game where you use a slingshot to launch birds at green pigs placed in structures made of wood, ice, and stone.

Solitaire: A card game where you have to move all of the cards from a deck into one or more piles, arranged by suit and rank.

What else to do During Long Road Trips?

Road trips can be a great way to bond with friends or family, but they can also be a great opportunity to get some alone time. If you’re looking for other ways to make the most of your time on the road, here are some ideas:

Listen to an audiobook or podcast: Audiobooks and podcasts can be a great way to keep your mind occupied during a long drive.

Enjoy the scenery: Take some time to appreciate the scenery around you. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife.

Take a nap: A long drive can be tiring, so if you need to, take a quick power nap to refresh yourself.

Eat healthy snacks: It’s easy to reach for unhealthy snacks when you’re on the road, but try to resist the temptation and opt for something healthier instead.

Stretch your legs: When you take a break from driving, make sure to stretch your legs to prevent cramping and stiffness.

Listen to music: You can create a playlist with everyone’s favorite songs. Also, try to avoid listening to the same music over and over again to prevent boredom.

Have a mini dance party: When everyone is feeling energetic, have a mini dance party in the car. This is a great way to stay entertained and burn off some energy.

Take pictures: Document your road trip with plenty of pictures. This will help you remember all the fun you had.

Talk to your passengers: If you’re driving with others, take the opportunity to have some quality conversation. You might even learn something new about the people you’re traveling with. Also, you might be surprised at how much you have to talk about.

When will you have a road trip?

Road trips are much fun for all family members. To conclude, playing mini-games, board games, and talking to your fellow passengers are all great things to do on a road trip. So the next time you’re planning a long car ride, keep these ideas in mind, and you’re sure to have a good time.
